This scented sachet is a form of amulet sold at Japanese shrines. The octagon represents the “eight directions” in Feng Shui, and is said to attract happiness from all directions and ward off evil spirits. The bag shape is for packing lots of happiness. Gourds are believed to take the place of the body.
